‘The only side effect is a really good bum’.

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

How I fell in love with EMS and started a fitness revolution across the UK.

I began EMS training 4 or 5 years ago. I was working as a Marketing Manager in my home country of Denmark and had a busy and hectic lifestyle because of it. I was into fitness, in fact I’d train pretty much everyday. I loved horse riding and yoga too, I was massively fit, yet still, soon after starting EMS training, I felt enormous enhancements in my body.

EMS was so perfect for me. Training was short, only 20 minute sessions and I noticed quickly that my bum was becoming less and less flat. I have three boys and any mother will know the struggles to regain body tone and shape after childbirth. I had gained a new level of strength too and I felt so much more in control of movements when I undertook my active hobbies.

Unsatisfied at work and inspired by EMS, I decided to quit my job, become an XBody EMS instructor and start a new life in the fitness and wellness industry. EMS was spreading in Denmark and my business grew fast. EMS is so great because results are completely accelerated. Even the sleepiest muscles in the body like the traps and glutes will fire and this improves posture alongside strength. EMS rebuilds lost mind-body connections and movement is optimised completely.

Within that first year, my whole family relocated to the UK for my husband's work. Though EMS was a much lesser known training concept across the North Sea, I gained 50+ new clients within 2 months of launching and 90% of my clients saw huge results. With this, I qualified as a Master Trainer in order to take EMS beyond Surrey and teach new instructors nationwide how to deliver perfect transformations. I then negotiated the UK distribution rights with XBody to make sure this incredible technology spread to the right professionals.

Today, our XBody family in the UK consists of 15 knowledgeable professionals, mainly in the South and our team is growing every single day. Professionals try EMS once or twice and come to the realisation that they can achieve much better results than without it and integrate it quickly into their existing fitness business. My dream is to have EMS training available in every UK town, just like it is in Germany and Brazil.

EMS makes you conscious of your body. The body suit filled with ergonomically placed electrodes doesn’t let your bigger muscle groups cheat and do the work for the smaller, sleepy ones. Even the weakest mind-muscle connections are activated, an impossible task without access to EMS. It’s those sleepy muscles that cause imbalance, injury and bad posture in the long term and EMS is really a preventative and curative solution in one. For building strength, EMS achieves the kind of contraction that only heavy weight training can, without the need for additional weights, reps and pressure. By sending electrical impulses to muscles we can make the fast twitch fibres (the powerful ones) contract from the outset.

I love EMS because of the way it can be an effective treatment for injury and an effective training method in one. Even for professional athletes. It’s so flexible and safe. It’s efficient at building strength, correcting posture and obliterating those common excuses of ‘I have no time’ or ‘I can’t train because I’m injured’ or ‘I quit because I’m not seeing results’ that we are all too familiar with as exercise professionals. Unfortunately, for your unmotivated clients, EMS leaves no room for excuses. Failure is not an option.

EMS originated as a healthcare solution, used by physiotherapists and biomechanists alike. Since EMS can build strength without the need for additional weights, it becomes a fantastic option for those in injury rehabilitation or with joint problems. Across Europe, EMS is available as a prescribed healthcare treatment and we are working on taking referrals from the NHS across the UK too. The way that EMS can repair and even prevent long term problems from occurring in the first place, is extraordinary.

Often, people don’t completely believe that EMS can build muscle as effectively as I say it can. Diverting quickly back to my own personal journey, I haven’t lifted a weight in 4 years. I recently invested in a Tanita Scanner which shows you your muscle to fat ratios in the body so i could prove how muscle mass can be increased with EMS alone. I weigh 56kg and the Tanita scanner told me that 46kg of that is muscle. Once again, no weights in 4 whole years.

With myself and my clients, I’ve found EMS so uniquely effective in rebuilding and reshaping the abdominal muscles after childbirth. The spreading of the abdominals is almost impossible to fix with traditional strength training because it’s dangerous to place strain on the muscles after they’ve been displaced. From 2 to 9 to 12 months (depending on the individual), I’ve seen post-childbirth abdominal muscles be completely realigned and reshaped in a safe way.

There is another specific client story which always sticks in my mind. I began working with a young woman who suffered a knee injury where the nerve to her hamstring had been damaged, causing her to lift her entire leg from the hip. In just one session, she felt her hamstring get activated by the electrical current and this activation was maintained everyday.

I believe that EMS is going to transform the UK fitness market in the coming years. If we take Germany as an example, boutique studios offering EMS have been springing up countrywide and gyms are now offering shop-in-shop EMS treatments in a small and designated space. EMS in the UK is young and it’s a great time to get onboard as the market begins to mature. Brazil and Germany are the global leaders in EMS training and it’s been wonderful to watch as EMS has enhanced and super-charged existing fitness businesses rather than replaced them, whilst simultaneously opening new markets up for professionals.

EMS will fast forward all desired client results by activating sleepy muscles and drive fast twitch fibres to contract and grow without the need for weights and reps. There comes a point in traditional fitness training where results with plateau and EMS fills that gap to take services and transformations to the next level. Whether the goal is to increase speed, strength, capacity or rehabilitate from injury, EMS offers a powerful and personalised solution for your clients.

It’s a great business to run too, you have full control over the programming, delivery and service style that you deliver. The XBody technology becomes your tool to deliver your best work. Back in Denmark now, I run 4 studios and I love my job. I can’t get enough. I help people get the best results they possibly can in a way that fits around their modern lifestyles and provides fast and visible transformations.
